The Highlands of Asiago in northern Italy, also known as Altopiano Asiago Sette Comuni, are situated in the northern areas of the Province of Venice and are made up of 8 municipalities, each with small hamlets surrounding it.
Feeling the ravages of winter, which has been mild for a couple of years, even for this area of Italy that sits 1000m above sea level, I decided to go out and do some shots. Driving in an easterly direction, I noticed clouds of mist coming up a valley directly up the mountains from Bassano del Grappa, which many of you probably know is famous for our Grappa liquor.
This area is nearly always subject to thermal activity. With a mixture of mist and low clouds and being very rural, with a few hamlets, fields and pine forests, I knew that I could get the images that I was looking for.
As a landscape photographer, I live for these moments, and the swirling, misty conditions made my heart sing. I pulled out my camera gear to capture these incredible scenes unfolding very quickly. The absolute cherry on top was the break in the mist that exposed this small clump of trees in a somewhat barren winter landscape.
Fog and mist give wonderful soft lighting, and as this fog was white and moving around very quickly, to get the look that I wanted, I applied some positive exposure compensation. As always, a tripod came out, which I cannot do without. The shot came out exactly as I had envisioned; it was not a happy photo but rather full of mystery, with warm tones supporting the cool, misty conditions that were present.
