Early winter, when the temperature dips below freezing but the mountains are still lacking in snow, is one of my favorite times of year to shoot the waterfalls of the Adirondacks.

On this December afternoon, the tannin-stained water of the Ausable River was still rushing, and the spray from this pretty cascade had frozen and adorned the surrounding boulders with fascinating ice formations. The late afternoon sun poked through the thin clouds just enough to give some soft lighting to the scene, and I was able to capture this photo as an expression of the haunting beauty of the winter season.
