While travelling through Maine, I stopped to photograph a sunset view of the Portland Head Lighthouse, a famous landmark captured by thousands of other photographers. It was my first time there, and I arrived a little late, so I trotted from a parking lot a short distance down a path to this location just before sunset.
I liked the composition, with the rocky coastline leading from the red flowers in one corner to the lighthouse in the opposite corner and a second lighthouse in the far distance. However, I was a little puzzled because I was the only person photographing at this location.
I knew that the lighthouse typically attracted many people for the sunset view. After quickly taking photos at this location, I walked farther to the end of the path, where I found a flock of photographers capturing images of the lighthouse from a second perspective. I realized that this second perspective was the one I had seen in many photos of the lighthouse. However, on this day, I preferred the first perspective and chose this exposure for the final image.
