He was just watching a bird looking for food. Suddenly, he decided to stretch his wings just before taking off and was lucky enough to get the catch-lite in the eye with early morning sunlight coming from the direction to allow light onto the underside of the bird, creating good colour balance and a photograph which has scored well for me in local competitions.
Having spent a fair amount of time at this location, the one thing that stands out is that patience is a necessary requirement when photographing birds.
