During my travels to New Zealand in March 2016, I had the opportunity to photograph the Wanaka Tree, one of the most photographed trees in the world. Despite several days of rain and overcast skies, I was in Wanaka for only one morning.
The early hours were still overcast, and I had little hope of catching good light. However, the clouds began to part, and the sun started to peek through the moving storm clouds.
After every other photographer had left, I captured this stunning moment as the sunlight highlighted the golden leaves of the tree, making it stand out against the cloudy mountain backdrop.
Visiting New Zealand in the fall is a must, as the trees transform from greens to vibrant oranges, yellows, and reds—a sight not to be missed.
