I visited Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse in Maine in June 2021 as part of a photography workshop dedicated to photographing lighthouses on the coast. The group visited the lighthouse in the early morning, and we photographed it as the sun broke the horizon off to the left of the island where it is located.
By climbing carefully down the rock face in front of where we parked, I obtained a lovely photograph with the lighthouse in the background, the sun breaking the horizon to the left, and a wave breaking on the rocks in front of me.
We returned to the location later that day as the sun was setting behind us, casting a bright, even light on the lighthouse. Williamson showed us how, by getting very low and close to a puddle on the ground in front of us, we could photograph both the lighthouse and its reflection—an image that could not generally be reproduced by photographing the lighthouse using the inlet in front of us because the movement of the water would not allow it.
I was able to use a relatively fast shutter speed, which allowed me to freeze the flag in front of the lighthouse as the light breeze was blowing it. Obtaining this image proved to be a wonderful conclusion to a very productive day and a great reminder of a very productive and enjoyable workshop.
