I took this photograph at sunrise on the coast near Øster Hurup in northern Denmark. That morning, a dense sea fog was drifting slowly along the shoreline from north to south. As the sun rose above the horizon, it disappeared behind the fog almost immediately, leaving only its light visible through the mist.
I was drawn to the simplicity of the scene. The sea was completely calm, allowing the soft colours and streaks of light to reflect across the water. Without the sun itself becoming the subject, the atmosphere became the photograph.
I kept the composition as minimal as possible, using the few branches emerging from the water as quiet points of reference within the open space. They help convey the scale of the scene without distracting from the light.
For me, this image is a reminder that some of the most memorable sunrises are not defined by seeing the sun itself. Sometimes it is the light, filtered through changing weather, that creates the strongest impression.
