This was taken in 2019 in the early morning from Passo di Giau, just above Cortina d’Ampezzo. It was where I fell in love with the Dolomites again.
The first time had been over twenty years earlier, in 1997, whilst skiing on the slopes that surround one of the most iconic mountains in the area, Sassolungo. To see more of these landscapes in the autumn, late October in fact, was no less breathtaking—that of Monte Nuvolao, in particular.
The usual shot taken from Passo di Giau is of the large buttress of Monte Nuvolao itself, with the hotel near its base. The line of peaks in this photo are off to the left of Nuvolao, in this case with the sun’s rays heralding the start of another day in these spectacular surroundings. I could have stayed there the whole day, just breathing in the views before me and beyond.
