This image was taken during a dedicated photographic trip to the Dolomites in Italy. The trip was during Autumn, which meant that sunrise was at a more respectable hour than midsummer.
Access to the location was along unsurfaced roads, which at this time of year are closed to public vehicular traffic. This required us to hire an off-road specialist who had a licence to use the upper section of the track to the edge of the lake, which is located at a high altitude. This saved a walk of several kilometres from the start of the track to the end of the public access.
The viewpoint of the lake, woods and the peak of Cimon Della Pala is from a small islet accessed by stepping stones. Autumn is the optimum time to visit for the colours.
