I knew I had to drive an hour from a small town in Rocky Point, Oregon, to get up in time for sunset on a chilly August morning in Crater Lake National Park to catch the sunrise. I had scouted out a great location from the dormant volcano’s western rim to get a great view of the sun peaking over the rim.

I waited in the cold, 35-degree air for an hour, excited with anticipation of the display to unfold. After watching the sun peaking over the edge of the dormant volcano, I walked along the rim to find a great spot peering through the pines to get a shot of the rise of a star we call our sun.
