This was shot in March 2023, on my first visit to the Faroe Islands. The entire archipelago had been battered by heavy snowstorms when I arrived, and it remained that way throughout the entire trip. The freezing, strong winds and turbulent, snowy weather were a recipe for some very unique photos from the Faroes, which doesn’t normally receive such prolonged snowfall.
That particular day, hours before sunset, I drove around to Gásadalur waterfall, took some photographs there, and upon returning I stopped again to take this panoramic image, among others. I had the place all to myself, and to my excitement, suddenly the sky turned very dramatic. The sun dipped below the snowy storm clouds and shone through the haze of another, higher cloud system, creating an eerie look while simultaneously producing some spectacular god rays. I stayed and took many more photos until those fleeting conditions were gone, lasting mere minutes. In the end, I don’t know if I was shaking from excitement or because I was freezing due to the strong, cold winds. Thankfully, this shot stitched perfectly together despite including a significant portion of the ocean.
