Shiroka Polyana is an artificial lake nestled in the Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of approximately 1,500 metres, around 30 kilometres south of the town of Batak. Encircled by dense coniferous forests, the lake provides a refreshing retreat even during the height of summer. Its scenic location and abundance of fish make it a popular destination for visitors. During the summer months, many come to camp along the shores, often leaving behind noticeable litter; by mid-September, however, the area becomes far quieter. A small grocery store near the forestry buildings on the western shore offers provisions and a place to refill water supplies.

Shiroka Polyana lies in the Western Rhodope region along the Batak–Dospat road. From the vicinity of the Shiroka Polyana National Forestry buildings, only a limited portion of the lake is visible. Continuing south toward Dospat, after approximately 2.5 kilometres, a fork to the left leads to PB ‘Slancheva Polyana’ (Sunny Meadow Recreation Base), providing access to the southern side of the lake. The road to the recreation base is suitable for cars up to the lake wall; beyond this point, several damaged sections render it impractical for vehicles, though it remains ideal for walking or cycling.

This photograph was captured in early autumn, a time when the cold morning water rises as vapour, forming a natural curtain that diffuses the sunlight. This soft, ethereal light gently illuminates the surrounding forest and water, enhancing the lake’s tranquil atmosphere. The combination of mist, muted autumn tones, and the quiet stillness of the lake creates a serene and contemplative scene, emphasising the enduring beauty and calm of the Rhodope Mountains. Shiroka Polyana, at this time of year, becomes a place to pause, observe, and appreciate the delicate interplay of water, light, and forest.
