Sunrise At Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California, USA

Sunrise At Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California, USA

There is a specific, fleeting silence that only exists in the high desert moments before the sun breaks the horizon. Standing at Zabriskie Point with my Canon R6 Mark III, I watched the Amargosa Range transform from a silhouette of cold blues into a rhythmic dance of light and shadow. This image isn’t just a […]

Lilied Path Monochrome, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

Lilied Path Monochrome, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

Some pictures simply whispers that they want to be captured. The water path through the lilies was the voice here. It was too symmetrical to pass up. The problems revolved around shooting from a moving, swaying boat. Shooting at 1/250sec seemed to solve the problem. I simply like the black-and-white effect.

Namib Desert Dust, Hardap, Namibia

Namib Desert Dust, Hardap, Namibia

Gondwana Namib Desert Lodge at sunset, 100 km from Sossusvlei. Desert dust rises in the evening wind, illuminated by shafts of light that cut across the hills. In one of the world’s oldest deserts, the landscape settles into gold.

Mesquite Sand Dunes Sunrise, Death Valley National Park, California, USA

The alarm clock is a jarring intruder early in the morning, but in Death Valley, the reward for early rising is measured in gold. This image, captured with my Canon R6 Mark II, represents that fleeting moment when the desert transitions from a cold, blue shadow into a living, breathing landscape. The experience Trudging through […]

Desert Ride, La Reparticion, Peru

Desert Ride, La Reparticion, Peru

In August 2018, we travelled to Peru and Bolivia as members of an organised trip. Peru features a 1,555-mile (2,500 km) long, narrow desert strip along its Pacific coast, making up about 10% of the country and ranking among the driest places on Earth. For that trip, I carried two identical Olympus cameras, the first […]

Red Sands, Dubai

Red Sands, Dubai

During a hot air balloon ride over the Dubai desert, your gaze is drawn to the distance. The Dubai skyline is very impressive, especially when the sun sets. However, the desert is also fantastic for nature photographers. Mountains on the horizon, camels and wild gazelles below you, and the peace and quiet to take it […]

Lost In Las Bardenas Reales Desert, Spain

Lost In Las Bardenas Reales Desert, Spain

We have very few deserts in Europe; however, Spain has two: one in the north and one in the south, made famous by cinema and television. The Bardenas Reales is a semi-desert area covering 39,200 hectares (392 km²) in southeastern Navarre (north of Spain), between Tudela and Carcastillo. It encompasses the Bardena Blanca, a desert […]

Dusk At Rangkul, Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan

Dusk At Rangkul, Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan

On the edge of Tajikistan’s Pamir Mountains, at 4,000 m above sea level, just kilometres away from China’s Xinjiang, lies the Rangkul Valley: one of the country’s most remote locations. The landscape is arid, barren, and hostile, save for two brackish lakes—Rangkul and Shorkul—whose nutrient-rich waters attract migratory birds from as far away as the […]

White Pocket Reflection, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Utah, USA

White Pocket Reflection, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Utah, USA

I was exploring the White Pocket area of the Vermilion Cliffs one afternoon in November when I noticed that the clouds were moving in. I also saw that water from the recent rains was forming a small pool near the “Brain Rocks” area. I explored the pool to see where the best reflections were and […]

Light At Eureka Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California, USA

Light At Eureka Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California, USA

Getting to the incredible Eureka Dunes, deep in the backcountry in Death Valley National Park, requires a high-clearance all-wheel drive and time, but it is a beautiful drive the entire way. Once I arrived at the backcountry camp and had Gracie, my adventure van, set up for the night, I packed up the backpack and […]
