One of the most magnificent birds found in Costa Rica is the King Vulture. These incredible birds are protected, and thanks to being accustomed to people, they’re not shy at all around human presence.
After spending some time photographing the vultures, I noticed one perched high in a tree, staring down at me. Something about its posture made me focus all my attention on that single bird. I had a feeling it was about to take flight—and I was right.
Moments later, it launched from the branch and flew straight toward me. I kept tracking it through the viewfinder and managed to capture a series of close-up images in flight. Watching such a powerful and striking bird glide effortlessly overhead was an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of photographing wildlife in Costa Rica.
