“Feel the Curves; Don’t Hug them.” This is what the traffic safety sign next to the highway says (lower right corner). The highway makes a sharp turn to the left around the switchback. The 434 km long Srinagar-Leh Highway (NH1) is the lifeline connecting Leh in Ladakh to the rest of India via the Kashmir Valley. There is no railroad yet to traverse this formidable region (they are building one).
Geologically, the contrasting colors and unusual patterns of the rocks are very interesting. You may call these the foothills of the mighty Himalayas.
