Earth’s Shadow, Hamn, Senja, Norway

Hamn is a small settlement on a small island off a large island (Senja) in the north of Norway.

On my first morning there at the start of April, I woke to a cloudless sky, often a disappointment to those of us who’ve spent the night dreaming of their ideal sunrise photo shoot.

But there was no dismay on this occasion. The striking pink sunrise in the photograph was at the anti-solar point beyond Hamn. Although the colours are intense, the sun rose behind the camera. The blue band that forms near the horizon, and gradually fades as sunrise approaches, is the Earth’s shadow, projected onto the pink sky.

The sunrise was the main event, but I was glad of the advantages (shape and contrast) of having the low snow-clad mountains as a foreground, and I should register thanks to whoever built the red house in the left centre of the frame.
