Bristlecone Pines (*Pinus longaeva*) are the oldest non-cloning organic organisms on planet Earth. They live at high altitudes (9,500–11,500 feet) along the crests of a few dozen locations in the western United States, with the oldest being nearly 4,000 years old. I view my trips there as a “pilgrimage to visit the elders.” I usually spend a week communing with them and hoping for clouds!
Patience has its rewards, and I received mine on my fourth day. I could see them coming and bided my time until they arrived and the sun lowered, warming the light. In their presence, I felt on top of the world, and nearly was!
