After a long day of exploring Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, my companions decided to rest and eat. I chose to return to the park as the light was improving as the day slowly came to an end. The Chimney Rock formation had captured my attention earlier in the day, but the lighting was harsh, and I hadn’t created the image I had in mind.
Wandering around a large open area to the northwest of Chimney Rock, monitoring the lighting and looking for elements in the landscape that I felt would give Chimney Rock the prominence I wanted to express in the image I had in mind, I noticed the little arroyo, the dead juniper, and the brush along the arroyo. I realized I had found the elements I was looking for to create the image I had in mind.
Upon later review of the image I had originally created in color, I was curious to see what it looked like in black and white. Once I converted the image to black and white, I knew I had created the image I was seeking.
