Mulagljufur Canyon is among the most beautiful places in Iceland. My wife and I first hiked up to the edge of this canyon in 2015. The only people we met on our hike were a small group led by a local guide who asked us how we had found the place. The path was so faint in places that we lost it briefly on the walk up. But the view at the top was absolutely stunning, with vibrant green covering the vertical walls and waterfalls cascading into the canyon. And we had the whole canyon to ourselves. We spent time in between rain showers soaking in the view and having lunch at this viewpoint. I captured images of the dazzling scene, with clouds hovering on the ridgetops.
We hiked up to this viewpoint again in 2023. This time there was an almost constant stream of people on the path, which was easy to follow due to heavy foot traffic. When we reached the edge, people dotted the ridgeline in front of this viewpoint, many of them taking selfies. I moved along the ridgeline and waited for others to move out of my frame, then took photos of the spectacular canyon, this time with most of the ridges free of clouds. This image was one of my favorites. Rather than bemoan not having the canyon to ourselves again, after I finished photographing, I borrowed several other families’ phones to take selfies for them. I think we all wanted a photo memory of our time in this gorgeous place.
