This image was the culmination of an adventure in the Scottish hills during a workshop held in November when, as luck would have it, we had snow on the tops. The challenge was to photograph An Teallach at dawn. This range is in North West Scotland and rises to 1062m on one of its peaks. An Teallach is a complex mountain massif with ten distinct summits over 3,000 feet (914 m).
We set off very early one morning to capture this sunrise. To reach this spot, we had an hour and a half trudge in the dark through deep snow to reach our scouted position. There was no path, and we had to cross a stream and a small fence on the way. Our head torches seemed rather inadequate in the dark. The distance covered was not far, but conditions made it seem so. However, we were in the hands of an experienced guide with a compass! Eventually, we reached our position on a ridge looking back at An Teallach.
I took many images as the sun rose and moved around the mountain. This is a stitched image (5 frames) at the end of a wonderful sequence of light appearing from behind us and then lighting up around us. A truly wonderful experience.
