The final evening of my first five-day photography workshop at Glacier National Park seemed like a total disaster. A sudden lightning storm and driving rain on Logan Pass forced our small group to pack our gear and flee, leaving us thoroughly defeated as we drove back to the hotel.
Halfway down the pass, however, the clouds fractured, exposing a breathtaking golden sunset across the valley. We scrambled out of our cars, frantically setting up tripods under rain covers. My instructor suggested “bracketing” three different exposures to capture the extreme dynamic range. When I admitted I lacked the software to combine them, he promised, “Shoot the RAW files, send them to me, and I’ll blend them for you.” He never sent it back.
Twelve years later, I discovered those forgotten RAW files tucked away on an old hard drive. Now armed with the professional software and technical knowledge I once lacked, I manually blended the exposures myself in Lightroom. The final image from my old, lower-end camera turned out beautifully—a profound triumph proving that my skills had finally caught up to the magnificent light I captured all those years ago.
