A summer thunderstorm passed through the town where I live earlier in the day. As early evening progressed, weather radar and satellite imaging showed clearing to the west. This meant to me that there might be some dramatic post-storm light as the sun dipped below the Cascade Range of Central Oregon. I immediately got in my car and headed to the top of Pilot Butte, a very popular sunset location, to get a wide view of the mountains and photograph the landscape at this time.
The first thing I noticed, other than the amazing sunset glow, was the ceiling of clouds that framed the uppermost part of the sky. The textures and the blue-gray colors contrasted so well with the orange-yellow light from the setting sun. The glow painted the mountain peaks to the right of the image, while leaving the rest of the range in a somewhat silhouette. The Cascades are one of my favorite subjects to photograph, and this evening I was blessed with great light to capture this image. This was truly a wonderful moment and one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever witnessed from this spot.
