Morning light and fall colors reflecting on the Au Sable River in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

On a chilly October morning, I set out for the eastern side of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula to take in the fall colors. A large rainstorm was forecasted to come through late morning, so I figured an early morning hike was best.

I made it down to Iargo Springs on the Au Sable River around dawn and watched as the storm clouds loomed overhead. It rained on and off for the next 30 minutes, but as the sun came closer to rising, there was a brief reprieve. The water took on a glassy, reflective texture in the calm after the storm. The approaching sun gave a golden glow to the reflected clouds, and the faint light highlighted the yellows and reds of the changing leaves.

About an hour later, the rain came in full force and didn’t relent the rest of the day, so I was glad to have gone early.
