I woke up to a city completely blanketed in fog. It was barely light enough to see outside, and the radar showed heavy, stubborn cloud cover. Since I was already awake, I decided to take a chance and get behind the wheel anyway. The twenty-five-mile drive was a total whiteout, and my expectations for a successful shoot were incredibly low. But just as I arrived at the viewpoint, the sky opened up.

I had come to this spot specifically for a view of Mount Hood at sunrise. While the sky directly above the mountain was mostly clear, the real theatre was happening in the valley below. A thick layer of fog was trapped under the Cascade Range, and a gentle wind kept the clouds moving, making them appear to dance in and around the treetops.

The low expectations from the drive instantly vanished. I spent the morning completely absorbed in the scene, watching the light change and framing as many compositions as possible to capture the movement below.
