Lonely Pine, Blaisvatnet, Lyngen, Norway

There are many hiking routes in the Lyngen region in northern Norway. One of them leads to the intensely blue-coloured lake Blåisvatnet, which forms a striking contrast with the mountains in the background.

The trail is challenging due to a couple of kilometres of rocky terrain. Sturdy shoes are necessary, and it is also important to bear in mind that the weather can change quickly in this region. The best time for this hike is summer or autumn. In winter, the lake is covered by ice for a long period, sometimes until the beginning of June.

I was returning along the trail to my car and tent late on a summer evening. Midnight was gradually approaching, and the sun was shining very low near the horizon in front of me.

The sky had been clear for the entire trek until that point. I glanced back and saw dark clouds approaching threateningly. At the same time, I noticed that the lighting conditions had completely changed as the shadows of the clouds fell across the mountain peaks. This created an interesting contrast in the landscape, crowned by a lone pine tree at its centre.
