I recently ticked off an item on my hiking bucket list with a trip to the Lake District in England. I’ve long been mesmerised by images of the area and couldn’t wait to explore for myself.

This is the view of Crummock Water near the beginning of a day hike loop from Buttermere. We grabbed sandwiches for the trail from the farm cafe in town before setting off, and after a short walk through town and the farm, found ourselves approaching the lake.

Coming from Phoenix, the lushness of the area was so refreshing. Streams, fresh bracken, small waterfalls and wildflowers were ever-present, and the squishing of the soft ground underfoot suggested that saturation was a common condition.

As we approached the Crummock Water, bluebells began to appear, providing a beautiful complement to the greens of the hillsides and the blues of the lake and sky. Clouds moved with speed overhead, and I waited for a moment of sun to provide patches of light throughout the scene.

A stepped-down aperture provided just the right amount of softness in the background for my liking, and the result will always evoke memories of a vivid and vibrant place.
