Mid July, Sawtooth Mountains, early morning. What is not to like about this location? I took my grandson on his second backpack trip to the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho when this photo was taken. We spent three days and two nights camping on this trip. This photo was taken on our last morning before packing up our gear and heading out. The highest peak on the left is an unnamed 9,954 ft (3,034 m) peak. Imogene Lake sits at 8,441 ft (2,573 m) above sea level.
The previous evening as we were sitting by the side of the lake, my grandson was poking a stick at a floating log next to the shore. He got a little too close to the edge and fell in. Now, this was no problem as there was a shallow ledge where he went, and the water was only about 3 feet (1 m) deep.
I had previously bathed at this spot and knew that there was a drop-off just a few feet offshore. My grandson thought it was funny that he had fallen, and now that he was wet, he pursued the log that had floated away. He took about two steps and went off the edge. The look on his face was instant terror.
Of course, I was prepared to jump in and get him, but it only took a second for him to realize he could save himself with just a few strokes of his arm. When he got out of the water, we had a good laugh at his short swim.
