As a brief background on my photography, this piece was featured in The Guardian Readers’ Best Photographs on October 20, 2026. I am very thrilled to now share this work with the global community of Landscape and Wildlife Photo Magazines.
The defining challenge of capturing this image was highlighting the fleeting beauty of nature. Rather than a perfectly still reflection, I intentionally waited for a light breeze to create gentle ripples on the water, capturing the shimmering, textured gold of the sunset. Instead of a cloudless sky, I sought a day with cloud cover, patiently waiting for the precise moment when the sun dipped below the horizon and broke through the clouds.
Out of deep respect for the true beauty of nature, I chose to present this photograph exactly as it was captured in-camera, without any retouching or manipulation.
In May, just before rice planting begins, the vast fields of Toma Town in Hokkaido, Japan, are filled with water. A dramatic ray of light pierced through this seasonal water mirror as the sun went down. It captures a transient harmony between traditional Japanese agriculture and the raw power of the great outdoors.
