Let me tell you this unbelievable story. I took this photograph on April 28th at 5:30 am at Coulée Grou Beach in Montreal.

That early morning, I was driving to reach La Plage de l’Est, my local sunrise paradise location, to catch sunrise. On my way I saw these unusual colored clouds in the sky near the Coulée Grou Beach location. I quickly parked the car on the side of the road. I only grabbed my camera with the wide-angle lens, no tripod. I walked to the river shoreline.

I was flabbergasted to see the sky full of colored curved clouds and their reflection on the river.

Once again, my 16mm wide-angle lens was unable to seize the whole scene. This scene was too large. Consequently, I opted to take handheld three overlapping shots to create a panorama. I would focus on the distant shoreline. Before pressing the shutter, I worried about the scene’s dynamic range. I didn’t hesitate to set my camera to bracket three shots with 2-stop increments between each shot to capture the scene’s huge dynamic range! In post-processing, I would do an HDR panorama image in Lightroom.

Using the bracketed files, Lightroom created the final HDR panorama file.

I quickly get back to the car to reach my sunrise paradise location. At 5h42, I captured the following beauty.

Once again, planning, gear familiarity and curiosity paid off!
