Sunning Sea Lions, La Jolla Cove, San Diego, CA, USA

While on the PCH road trip, we stopped at La Jolla Cove to check out the coast, unaware it was a sea lion hangout. As I was wandering around watching annoying people getting too close to the sea lions (secretly hoping one of them got bit), I saw these two perched on a rock, basking in the sunlight and living their best life.

I’d noticed that every now and then, a larger wave would crash against the rocks, causing huge splashes behind them. I kneeled down to steady my camera as best as I could, and when the next huge wave came, I clicked away. I didn’t even notice the seagull taking off in the background until I was looking through the pictures later on.

I got this really cool shot, and one other with the seagull further up. Looking back now, I wish I’d stayed there longer to get more shots of these two beauties with the sea crashing behind them.
