Meerkats are one of my favorite animals. They’re not native to the continent where I live, but the zoo has brought them here and worked hard to create an environment that feels as close to their natural habitat as possible. I’m just really happy that I can see these fascinating little animals right here in my own city.
That day, I brought my camera to their enclosure. From a distance, I spotted one meerkat climbing up to the highest point, standing alert and keeping watch. I slowly raised my camera and pointed it toward him. Suddenly, he seemed to notice me and looked straight in my direction. For that brief moment, there was something almost commanding in the eyes of this little sentry. Without hesitation, I pressed the shutter and captured it.
