I always wanted to photograph the center of the Milky Way galaxy above the Matterhorn. Because the center of the Milky Way is only visible in August, I decided to go on a journey to capture the magnificent sky. It was two days after the solar eclipse, and some meteors from the Perseids were still falling through the night sky.
I decided to hike up to 3,500m in front of the Dufourspitze range. The two parts of the Gorner Glacier expanded below me, pointing straight towards the Matterhorn.
Lucky for me, on the Italian side, Cervinia was celebrating its 100th anniversary, and the Matterhorn was lit.
I spent the whole night taking panoramic pictures with a 24-200mm lens, shooting at 24mm and combining the pictures in Lightroom to create a 180° panorama. In between, I saw the alpinists waking up in the different huts to ascend the magnificent 4,000m peaks standing right before me.
The end result looks like a sci-fi movie, and I am really proud of that night.
