Impressive Sunset, Riviere Des Prairies, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

For many years, when I photographed sunrises and sunsets, I always tried to capture the sun as a star, similar to this image.

That night, I intended to change my approach for such an event. When the sun disappeared, the small clouds in the sky were perfect for executing the following approach.

My old OM-D camera has a special feature called “LIVE COMPOSITE.” On the first click, the camera captures the global scene. On the second click, every 0.6 seconds, the camera checks if there are pixels more lit than in the initial global scene; if so, it records these pixels. Five minutes after the first click, I pressed the shutter a third time to stop the process!

The camera recorded this final image. I did not manipulate this photograph in post-processing.

Personally, I like to say that this feature is a smart long exposure!

This scene confirms the importance of being familiar with our gear!
