I moved to Oregon from Virginia about 10 years ago. While in Virginia, I enjoyed finding waterfalls in western Virginia and the state of West Virginia, though there weren’t many, and they often required long drives. When I knew I was relocating to Oregon, I wondered if the state had many waterfalls. It turns out that’s a bit like wondering if New York City has any tall buildings.

The website Northwest Waterfall Survey lists 1,610 waterfalls in Oregon alone! As of this writing, I’ve managed to visit 64 of them, totalling 78 in the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia, Washington, and Idaho. This is one of my early finds, Henline Falls in the wilderness east of Salem, OR.

I almost always shoot at 1/5 or 1/6 second, which gives me water motion without the excessive “creaminess” that I often see in many moving water photos. That speed also allows for the freedom of shooting handheld, as my Nikon has plenty of image stabilization.
