This image was captured at sunset between the crests of Sunshine and Wilson Peaks in the San Juan Mountains. Dusk arrives as a sky combusting in orange and crimson above slopes that hold their blue.
The mountains form a gate, and through it the color pours like something escaping—as if the day has been slit open and is bleeding light before it heals shut into night. The trees insist on their own darkness even as everything around them ignites.
I find myself capturing these mountains often, as they always surprise me with differences in light, color, and shapes of clouds in a matter of minutes.
