Fall’s Rushing Veil, Aberfeldy, Scotland

Taken in mid-October, this photograph was an exercise in balancing tricky contrast and capturing motion. The vibrant autumn colors were at their absolute peak, but the dappled light filtering through the heavy canopy presented a dynamic range challenge.

Shooting with my Fujifilm X-Series system, I wanted to ensure that the rich textures of the moss-covered rocks and the brilliant oranges of the leaves weren’t lost. I set up my tripod low to the water’s edge to create a strong foreground leading line with the rushing creek. By utilizing a circular polarizer to cut down the glare on the wet rocks and a subtle neutral-density filter, I was able to extend the shutter speed just enough to smooth out the rapids without losing the definition of the water’s flow. The result is a balanced composition where the warmth of the changing season perfectly frames the cool, dynamic energy of the forest stream.
