The Town of Milford is located in southern New Hampshire (USA) on the banks of the Souhegan River. The town hosted many mills in the eighteenth century and was made famous by the thriving granite industry, once known as The Granite Town in the Granite State. Milford also has the advantage of being less than a 30-minute drive from my home.

Tucker Brook Town Forest in Milford includes 285 acres of forested and rolling hills with some excellent hiking trails. The trails pass 10,000-year-old glacial erratics left by retreating glaciers during the last Ice Age. One of the main attractions along one of the loop trails is Tucker Brook Falls, a small 12-foot-tall yet photogenic waterfall along Tucker Brook. The falls drape over rows of thin ledges, making for a pretty multi-tiered waterfall when the water is flowing well.

I took this photo in late autumn when the trees were dropping their leaves. Fallen leaves in shades of orange and brown blanket the moss-covered rocks and surrounding woodland, creating a picturesque and serene landscape along Tucker Brook. A fallen tree trunk lies diagonally across the lower portion of the waterfall, adding a natural element and a leading line to the composition. The surrounding forest is mainly composed of tall, slender evergreen trees.

It was a bright overcast day, so the light was soft and diffused —ideal conditions for waterfall photography. I took a half-second exposure to smooth the water while retaining texture, capturing the motion of the water to add an overall sense of tranquility to the scene. I gravitate toward smaller waterfalls with character, and Tucker Brook Falls meets that criterion.
