I was in Carlisle when I noticed the thunderstorm brewing out to the West but moving in fast. I got into the car and drove East to get in front of the storm. I arrived at Hadrian’s Wall and hiked up to this, my favorite location, and waited for the storm to arrive.
Only a photographer would think it normal to be standing on a hillside with thunder rumbling overhead and hail battering down, but after 20 minutes, the storm started to clear, and I managed to capture this image, a 5-shot panorama. I have many images from this location in a variety of conditions—sunrise and sunset, sunshine and snow—but this remains my favorite.
