I captured this photograph on the Konza Prairie in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. Many people picture Kansas as a landscape of endless flat fields, but the Flint Hills tell a very different story. Their rolling ridges and sweeping vistas are among the last remaining expanses of tallgrass prairie in the world, offering a landscape that feels both timeless and wild.
I arrived just before sunrise, hiking up the trail with my camera, tripod, and gear as the sun was coming up. The trail led to the top of one of the hills, where I was rewarded with an incredible panoramic view stretching for miles in every direction. Below me, the valleys were draped in a blanket of soft morning fog.
At first, the sky was mostly covered by clouds, and I wasn’t sure if the sunrise would produce the light I had hoped for. But the clouds were moving quickly, and soon a golden sunlight poured through the opening, sending dramatic rays across the landscape and illuminating the mist below.
I had already positioned my camera low to the ground on my tripod, carefully composing the scene to include the rocks in the foreground. Those rocks anchored the image, drawing the eye toward the glowing horizon where the sun’s rays broke through the clouds. In that fleeting moment, the prairie seemed to come alive with light, and I was fortunate to capture a scene that perfectly reflected the quiet beauty and grandeur of a Kansas morning.
