Golden Autumn Larches, Lake Calaita, Trentino, Italy

The Dolomites and the surrounding Prealps are home to me, and they are landscapes I cherish immensely. Larch trees are an iconic part of this region, and in autumn, the golden light of late afternoon catches their upper branches, transforming them into brilliant shades of orange.

What drew me most to this scene was the delicate layer of ice crystals covering the plants at the foot of the trees, a subtle reminder of winter’s steady approach. That hint of encroaching cold deepens the feeling that these fleeting moments of warmth, colour, and light are already beginning to fade.

The dark waters of the alpine lake, together with the shadowed forest beyond, provide a striking contrast that seems to illuminate the larches and their reflections, allowing them to glow against the still, mirror-like surface.
