There’s no other forest in the world like the incomparable Coast Redwood forest in Northern California, especially in late spring when the rhododendrons are blooming and the frequent coastal fog that nourishes these forest giants drifts through the groves of these massive trees. When the sun rises high enough to cut through the fog, the light and atmosphere can be otherworldly. One of my favorite places on the planet.

On one such morning, I was fortunate enough to see and photograph these conditions. The fog and sunbeams lasted several hours, casting magical light through the vaulted cathedral of soaring trees. This particular image was one of my favorites of the many wonderful images I shot that morning. I loved the way the sun spotlighted the trees in the center, casting a golden glow on their massive trunks. I also loved the depth of this scene, the atmosphere, and the warm/cool color palette. A morning I’ll never forget.
