Living on Vancouver Island, I often drive the beautiful Victoria waterfront. Whenever I drive to Victoria, I always take my photo gear. On this bright, sunny day I started my trip in the downtown harbor, taking pictures of the Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings. I then proceeded out to the breakwater and took shots of the cruise ships docked there.

As the water was very calm, I wasn’t expecting to see any great photo opportunities. However, as is often the case, the unexpected happens. When I arrived at Ross Bay and saw the low tide had exposed this rock formation, I parked my car and, with camera in hand, started to walk around to find a good composition.

I took the stairs down to the beach for a closer look. I selected the composition as seen in this image. Setting up my tripod, attaching my Canon 70D and my Canon 24-105L lens, and making the necessary adjustments, I took the shot.

On returning home to Courtenay and loading it into Lightroom, I was very pleased with the end results.
