In Cathedrals of the Desert, I sought to capture the quiet grandeur of Capitol Reef National Park’s landscape. The monumental sandstone formations of the Temples of the Moon & Sun rise from the earth like ancient temples, their striated faces recording millions of years of geologic memory. Against the vast, open sky, these natural cathedrals evoke both reverence and humility — a reminder that the sacred is not always built by human hands.
The winding dirt road invites the viewer into the scene, tracing a path through solitude and discovery. It symbolizes our journey through impermanence, guided by curiosity and awe. The warm morning light of the desert — fleeting yet eternal — transforms stone into flame, illuminating the intricate textures of erosion and endurance.
This photograph is an homage to the stillness of the American Southwest, where emptiness becomes presence, and where the land itself seems to breathe with the weight of history and silence.
