In October 2024, I spent a wonderful week in the Charlevoix region with friends, all eager to capture the autumn beauty with our cameras. One morning, I was amazed to see a thick layer of fog that resembled a massive low cloud resting on the ground.
From my experience, I found that being at a higher altitude offers the best perspective of the scenery when fog is present. I drove along a small road atop a hill, parked my car on the side, and walked a few meters to take in the view. I was captivated by the natural-colored carpet of foliage, the slender trees, the distant mountains, the colorful clouds, and the valley enveloped in fog.
I took out my camera and, holding it steady, composed and framed my shot using a 26 mm focal length and an aperture of f/16. To achieve perfect exposure through “expose to the right” (ETTR), I intentionally overexposed the scene by 1.7 stops.
Looking down, I realized that the fog was concealing nature’s beauty. If it looked so stunning from above, I could only imagine how breathtaking it would be in the valley below. It was a clear invitation to explore the area further.
