Having climbed up onto Dyrholaey Cliffs with the wind gusting and dark clouds overhead, the early photographs on this afternoon in February portrayed a forbidding ocean with much drama.
As the afternoon wore on, the clouds receded, and the sun’s rays coming over my right shoulder started to bathe the bay below in soft light. When lit by sunlight, the basalt stack in the foreground reveals wonderful colours and textures. The black volcanic beach behind adds contrast.
Some of my travelling companions who had been to Dyrholaey Cliffs many times before said that they had never seen the stack lit as it was on this afternoon. I was more than happy to stay at this location and explore the angles and compositions until the sun had sunk below the crest of the cliffs. One has to ride one’s luck!
