I spent the last week of 2025 in the southwest of Portugal, near the coastal village of Almograve. This is one of my favourite places in the country, and one I have known since childhood. As a result, I often visit the area and take every opportunity to allow some time for photography. This photo was taken during an afternoon walk between Almograve and the small fishing inlet of Lapa de Pombas. After recent rains, the weather cleared, with clear skies and crisp air. I always carry a small camera with me during such walks, as one never knows when good photo opportunities will arise. In the last year, my camera of choice for travelling light has been the Fujifilm X-E5, coupled with the tiny Voigtländer 27mm f/2 lens.
As sunset approached, the temperature dropped considerably, but I stayed until the sun slipped below the horizon. I walked down from the car park to the beach and started looking for interesting compositions. I framed two rocks in the foreground, surrounded by the oncoming waves, complemented by the distant rocky headland and the sun touching the horizon. As a bonus, the sunset light turned the few clouds an intriguing mix of pink and purple.
After so many years photographing on this beach, I have a nice collection of sunset photos, but each one carries a different memory and seasonal mood. I really like it when the low angle of a winter sunset also carries some warm light, as in this case.
