My wife and I visited Victoria Falls during the dry season in 2013, when a drought resulted in extremely low water levels. This condition exposed much of the cliff faces that are usually hidden behind the cascading water at other times of the year.
One afternoon, I set out to find a viewpoint that would allow me to capture part of the falls backlit by the setting sun, with the rock ridges silhouetted against the light. I took a series of photographs from this vantage point, but I was not satisfied with the results.
The next afternoon, I returned to shoot from a slightly different angle, using a faster shutter speed to freeze the backlit plunging water. This time, I captured the best image of the series. I decided to process the photo in black and white, as the scene itself was predominantly composed of shades of black, white, and gray.
