I must confess that I have always had claustrophobia and a fear of darkness. To capture a proper image of the fall in Gljufrabui, one must be comfortable in these conditions. I found myself standing in ice water, enveloped in a thick frozen mist, while trying to get close enough to balance the difficult lighting under the earth.

I tried to anchor my tripod so that it would not slip on the moss-covered, slippery rocks. It was so difficult not to jar my camera while trying to still my chattering teeth. The sight was literally breathtaking! The greens were fluorescent, contrasting with the cave’s shadows and darkness and the brilliance of the crashing water.

I was there in September, which is generally a suitable month to visit weatherwise. When I think back, recalling my discomfort, I would venture forth again. Nature can be spellbinding. In this case, it was worth the fear, cold, and patience I had to overcome.
