The rocks high above Cape Kiwanda are a photographer’s dream and a photographer’s worst nightmare. I had always been lucky in this spot until this afternoon, having never been hit by a monster wave that reached my position (130 feet above the ocean) until this day.
But one massive wave crashed against the rocks below, sending spray far above my head and leaving me and my gear drenched and freezing cold. My natural instinct was to protect the front of the lens and prevent my tripod and camera from slipping away, which, miraculously, I managed to do. This shot was taken a few seconds later when the water retreated back down the rocks and into the Pacific until it was ready to attack again.
Someday, I will post some shots of the monster wave exploding off the jagged shore, but for now, I thought the light and atmosphere of the retreat were really cool!
