We’d just had lunch in Red Lodge, at Piccolo Cucina, and were on our way out of town when we stopped at a nice pull-over that turned out to be a spot where the old dirt roads led to the site of the Smith Mine disaster in 1943. It was the worst mine disaster in Montana. 74 miners died. A sign tells the story, but the mine itself is not visible from this vantage point.
